Organization

Centro de Estudios Internacionales (CEI) Center for International Studies works to contribute to economic and social justice through research and critical awareness campaigns about the global economic system, its main actors, and how they are involved in Nicaragua. Located in Managua, CEI collaborates with networks and social movements as a way to build strength and promote nonviolent alternatives to sovereignty, democracy, social and gender equity and environmental protection.

Madeline's Work

Madeline is the Program Coordinator for Economic Justice at CEI. In this position, Madeline conducts research on global economic justice issues such as development partnerships, climate change, and regional trade agreements. She also represents CEI in social movement events and coordinates many activities for youth groups on issues such as international aid and climate justice. Since 2005 Madeline has also worked with Two Generations-Nicaraguan Center for Promotion of Youth and Infants, where she coordinates volunteer efforts for organizations throughout the country in a fight against high-risk child labor, child abuse, and to promote child human rights.

"The great challenge today for any organization or leader is to achieve the revival of hope in people. There is something elemental in working with people to strengthen their sense of self-esteem and help them discover their abilities and resources. Getting people to believe that they can change the status quo, and that all human beings have something valuable to contribute, and in itself represents a giant step toward the goal."

Madeline is a recipient of the Central American Women's Leadership award, a program developed in partnership with the Seattle International Foundation to equip and inspire women's leadership in sustainable social change throughout the region.
