Application and Admissions Process

Step One: Assessment of Interest and 'Fit'

Two letters
are needed to initiate the admission process for the fellowship:
  1. From Applicant: A letter outlining why you are interested in applying for the Fellowship program and how you feel it will benefit you at this time. No longer than TWO pages in length. Please note that longer is not better in this case. What we are looking for is that you understand the Fellowship program;
  2. From International Organization: You will need to find a representative from an international organization who is willing to write a Letter of Support for you. THIS LETTER MUST BE ON THE ORGANIZATION'S COMPANY LETTERHEAD, SIGNED, AND BE SCANNED AND EMAILED TO THE ADDRESS BELOW. This Letter of Support needs to address the following questions:
    • How long have you known the candidate and in what capacity?
    • What is/has been the working relationship between the candidate and your organization?
    • Why it would be meaningful at this time for the candidate to participate in the iLEAP International Fellowship program?
    • How would you assess the candidates’ ability in:
      • social networking?
      • English language communication?
      • collaborating with others?
      • working in diverse cultures?

    • IMPORTANT: These should be FIRST scanned and THEN e-mailed (not via post) directly to iLEAP Executive Director, Dr. Britt Yamamoto at britt@ileap.org.

      Step Two: Screening
        • These two letters will be screened by two members of the iLEAP staff and, as appropriate, iLEAP International Faculty members.
        • If it is determined that the Fellowship program may be a good fit with the candidate, a more extensive, full application forms will be sent to the candidate.  Please note: applications will not accepted without an initial "Assessment of Interest and 'Fit'";
        • If it is determined that the Fellowship program is not a good fit with the candidate an e-mail will be sent for denials or with suggestions for strengthening the application for future.

      Step Three: Formal Application
        • After the candidate submits her/his full application, it will be carefully reviewed by an Admissions Committee, comprised of iLEAP staff, iLEAP Board members, iLEAP International Faculty, and other members of the iLEAP community;
        • Candidates who are recommended for advancement will be interviewed by iLEAP over Skype, or if possible, an in-country iLEAP International Faculty member.

      Step Four: Immigration Screening

        • Candidates who are successful with Step Three will begin their application for a J-1 Training Visa with the visa sponsor organization, EarthCorps.
        • Candidates will be interviewed by EarthCorps as part of the immigration process. The interview will be done using Skype;
        • Selected candidates will receive a visa packet to apply in their respective United States embassy within 10-20 days.

      Step Five: Visa Application and Flight Plan
        • Under the guidance of EarthCorps, the candidates receiving a visa packet will apply for the visa in their country;
        • Those who are successful in receiving their visas will then work with iLEAP to purchase and confirm their flight details.
        • This Step will be completed within 4 weeks before the start of the Fellowship program.

      Step Six: Travel to Seattle, USA
      • The end of your admissions process comes when you formally arrive in Seattle to begin the 10 week Fellowship program.
